Mini Refinery and Topping Plant

Mini Refinery, which is a term that refers to small refineries and in some cases it is different from Topping Plant units. Each refinery includes several departments, each of which has its own task.

The most important parts of a refinery are the tanks for feed, product and chemicals needed in it, units for separating types of raw products that are not considered final products by themselves, and refining operations and bringing them to the required specifications should be done there, final product refining units or intermediate and conversion units which are mainly done to reach the necessary specifications and standards. Utility units are also units that are responsible for heating, cooling, electricity, air for instruments and sewage treatment, etc.

Blending methods are used in this unit

If the refineries do not have catalytic parts through which they convert the products according to the standards required by the market, these refineries are referred to as topping plants. Figure (1) shows an example of Topping Plant. Blending methods are used in this unit to produce the final salable product. But if there is a need for high specs and instead of blending and using additives that reduce the profit margin and from a technical point of view, the market can be limited, conversion units should be built that have their own requirements and refinements.

These units have a set of independent equipments that are more complicated than Topping Plant units. It is worth mentioning that in some cases special purification units are used to sell the products produced by a Topping Plant. For example, in this project, the ODS method [1] will be used for gas condensate purification.

In the classification based on the degree of complexity, the refineries are divided into the following

• Topping Plant
• Hydro Skimming
• Cracking
• Coking

Mini-refineries are small units

Mini-refineries are small units for the production of refinery products with a capacity of 200 to 20,000 barrels per day, which have the ability to produce products that can be used by the final consumers (according to the required standards of the country). Now, we have to answer the question, what factor causes a refinery unit to reduce its capacity to produce the required products, and still create the appropriate economic added value to attract investment?

It should be noted that the technology and concept of a mini refinery is something completely different from the technologies of classic refineries, which only have a reduced scale (Miniaturized Refinery) or the primary separation units of a refinery (Topping Plant) that offers raw products as a product. And it should be treated with a completely different view from the last two concepts. The technologies in question have common points and other indicators that distinguish them from other types of refining units.
